City History
First settled by colonists from New York in 1853, Excelsior has fought to maintain its small town ambiance throughout the centuries. The town grew slowly, though always maintaining a busy city center. The downtown area has been home to many hotels, restaurants, and shops throughout the years. At one point, the city was even home to an amusement park. Today, Excelsior is keeping up the old-school charm with its restored steamboat The Minnehaha, and remains a quaint suburb of under 3,000 residents.
